Indian bitter melon or bitter gourd produces smaller but much bumpier fruits than the Chinese variety.  They also taste a bit more bitter.  These plants need to crawl so trellising is recommended.  The fruits are best green, so pick them before they change color.  The taste will change and they become soft when ripe.  At this stage, use them for harvesting seeds.
